Brockton Oval in Stanley Park will be the site of a solar thermal demonstration project – a Greenest City Action Team recommendation – which will heat water in the public washroom facilities and change rooms.

“This solar demonstration project is yet another initiative that will move us closer to our goal to become the greenest city in the world by 2020,” said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. “Pursuing and expanding opportunities for clean energy projects in our city saves us money, creates green jobs, and reduces our carbon footprint.”

Local businesses are taking up a City of Vancouver challenge to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—and in the process help Vancouver meet its goal of becoming the greenest city in the world by 2020.

Mayor Gregor Robertson announced the creation of the Corporate Climate Leaders Program in a keynote speech at the GLOBE 2010 Conference in Vancouver today.

Mayor Robertson joined MLS president Mark Abbott, Premier Gordon Campbell, Vancouver Whitecaps FC chief executive officer Paul Barber and President Bob Lenarduzzi to to mark the one-year countdown to the return of professional soccer in Vancouver.

“Hosting the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games showed to the world just how much passion the people of Vancouver have for sports,” said Mayor Robertson. “I know that the enthusiasm and spirit we’ve seen these past few weeks will carry over to 2011 when Vancouver joins Major League Soccer.

The Vancouver Homeless Count, taking place over 24 hours on March 22 and 23, 2010, will provide the City with updated information for staff as they revise the Homeless Action Plan for the City of Vancouver.

“This count gives us the critical baseline information we need to update our Homeless Action Plan, which will guide the City’s efforts to end street homelessness by 2015,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “We need updated, detailed information to track our progress.”
