Mayor Robertson announced several new investments in Vancouver today as part of the 60-day update of the Metro Vancouver Commerce program, which targeted international businesses during the Olympics.

 

“Our work to use the Games to leverage investment in our economy is delivering results for Vancouver,” said the Mayor. “We used the exposure of the Olympics to brand our City as the Green Capital – a place where high-growth businesses in the green economy should be investing. It’s been only eight weeks and already new companies are opening in Vancouver.”

olympic village aerialVancouver City Council approved an option Thursday evening to have half of the affordable housing at the Olympic Village as social housing, and half as essential workforce housing rented at market rates.

“This is the best option for the Olympic Village, given the financial difficulties we inherited,” said Mayor Robertson. “Construction on the affordable housing went $46 million overbudget under the last council between 2006 and 2008. The result is that we find ourselves forced to seek a compromise between social housing and market rentals.

2010_04_27_Canucks Day1Mayor Robertson declared April 27, 2010 as Canucks day in Vancouver, as the Canucks prepare to start their second round series against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Joined by Canucks Sports & Entertainment owner Francesco Aquilini, President and General Manager Mike Gillis, Chief Operating Officer Victor de Bonis, Canucks mascot Fin, the Green Men, members of council, along with dozens of city staff, Mayor Robertson raised the Canucks flag at City Hall, which will stay up as long as the Canucks are in the playoffs.

bike to work week 5Since last year’s Earth Day, Vancouver has made significant gains in becoming a greener, more sustainable city, said Mayor Robertson, and that there is a lot more the City will be doing in the coming months.

“Only a few weeks after Earth Day 2009 the Greenest City Action Team issued its first report,” said Mayor Robertson. “The Team’s quick start recommendations set us on a path of immediate action and we made major gains in the past year towards becoming the greenest city in the world by 2020.”
