Mayor Robertson welcomed today’s announcement from Premier Campbell and Minister Rich Coleman of $225 million in new money for social housing in Vancouver, calling it a major step towards achieving the City’s goal of ending street homelessness by 2015.

“This is great news for Vancouver, and is a major step towards our goal of ending street homelessness by 2015,” said Mayor Robertson. “Today’s announcement of $225 million brings the total provincial investment for new social housing in Vancouver to $333 million since December 2008. Our partnership with the provincial government is paying off and delivering real results for the people of Vancouver.”

This weekend marks the halfway point since the 2008 civic election, and City Hall is focussed on building on the successes of the 2010 Winter Games, says Mayor Gregor Robertson.

“Our city hosted an incredible Olympics and Paralympics, and the result is a growing sense of pride and ambition in Vancouver,” said Mayor Robertson. “We’ve emerged as a player on the world stage following the huge success of the Games, and our citizens deserve full credit for being gracious and energetic hosts.

2010_05_19_BCIT Project Get Ready

Mayor Robertson was at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) today to announce that the City of Vancouver and the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) are partnering with BCIT to help communities prepare for the use of Electric Vehicles (EV) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV). Initially founded by the Rocky Mountain Institute and in partnership with the City of Vancouver, Project Get Ready Vancouver will see BCIT champion the development of a five-year plan of action aimed at making the City of Vancouver electric vehicle ready.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, BCIT President Don Wright, and RMI Project Get Ready Project Manager Tripp Hyde “plugged-in” two electric vehicles today to symbolically mark the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for Project Get Ready Vancouver.

In front of hundreds of people Saturday, Mayor Robertson joined Canadian Olympic gold medalist Ashleigh McIvor, VANOC CEO John Furlong, Rick Hansen, Millenium Development, and Bob Rennie to celebrate the return of the Olympic Village from VANOC to the City.

“When the world’s athletes were here in February and March, they said it was amazing and today, we get the chance to see this beautiful new Vancouver neighbourhood,” said the Mayor.

“You are standing in a LEED Platinum-certified development – the greenest in the world, by that standard. It’s a wonderful achievement and one that we can all be proud of.”
