Involvement opportunity: Applications now open for Mayor's Engaged City Task Force

October 15, 2012 | Engaged City

Vancouver leads the world in many ways, and since taking office in 2008 Mayor Robertson has been committed to ensuring the City of Vancouver becomes a true leader on civic engagement.

The Mayor’s own conversations and recent research from the Vancouver Foundation have shown a strong yearning on behalf of Vancouver residents for a greater sense of connectedness, both with their neighbours and in how they engage and interact with City Hall.

City Council recently passed a motion to establish the Mayor's Engaged City Task Force, to increase neighbourhood engagement and improve upon the many ways the City connects with Vancouver residents.

The task force will consist of Mayor Gregor Robertson, Councillor Andrea Reimer, and 22 citizens.  Who should apply? Anyone with broad experience, expertise, or interest in community engagement. If you're reading this, that likely includes you!

Applications are now open, and will be accepted until November 16th, 2012 – Would you be interested in getting involved?

Making Vancouver a more engaged city will require focusing and making progress on the following priority issues:

1. Neighbour to neighbour engagement
2. Increased literacy of, and opportunities for engaging in, City processes and resource allocations
3. Enhancing how the city engages with citizens, and vice versa

In light of the Vancouver Foundation research on belonging and inclusion, particular attention will be paid to recruiting individuals with expertise and experience with engaging individuals 25-34 years of age and effective use of social media for community engagement.

The Task Force will commence its work in December and report back to City Council by June 2013.
