Mayor Gregor Robertson joined Parks Board Chair Aaron Jasper in opening the first Community Happenings Festival in Vancouver, a family-friendly community celebration of the 2010 Winter Games featuring arts and crafts, games, cultural performances, and visits from Olympic athletes.
The first festival took place this Saturday at Sunset Community Center. Over 1000 people came out to take part in the festivities, which included the opportunity to meet the Olympic mascots, as well as pose for a photo with the 1988 Calgary Olympic torch. During the Games, all city community centers and neighbourhood houses will have big-screen plasma TVs as part of the "Community Living Room" program, where people can stop by and join others from their neighbourhood to watch the Games.
