Today Vancouver City Council moved forward with plans to expand city-wide food scraps recycling, which will cut back on waste heading to landfill and takes action on a key commitment in Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 Action Plan.
Council approved plans to begin weekly food scraps recycling for all single-family and duplex homes (over 100,000 households) in Spring 2013, and approved in principle a requirement for all sectors in Vancouver – businesses and multi-unit buildings – to provide food scraps recycling by the end of 2013. Staff will report back by the end of 2012 with a detailed strategy for businesses and multi-unit building food scraps collection.
“City-wide food scraps recycling from duplexes and single-family homes alone will divert an additional 25,000 tonnes of organic waste away from our landfill each year and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 3000 tonnes,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “It’s a key city service that is by far the most frequently requested by our citizens.”
The new food scraps recycling program is a crucial step toward meeting Vancouver’s Greenest City 2020 zero waste target of reducing total waste to landfill or incinerator by 50% from 2008 levels.
Beginning in the spring of 2013, the frequency of garbage collection will be reduced from weekly to bi-weekly service, and collection for yard and food waste will be increased from bi-weekly to weekly service.
As part of the plan approved, every home in Vancouver will receive a kitchen container to make it easy for households to recycle food scraps.
Food scraps make up 40% of the weight of residential garbage collected by City of Vancouver.
The plan prepares the City to meet Metro Vancouver’s ban on organics going to landfill as of 2015.
