At the Closing Ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games Sunday night, Mayor Robertson handed over the historic Oslo Olympic Flag to Sochi, Russia, to mark the end of the Games in Vancouver and the start of the next Winter Games in 2014 in Sochi.
The Oslo flag is traditionally passed from the mayor of the current Winter Games host city to the mayor of the next Winter Games host city. The Oslo flag has been on display in the foyer of Vancouver City Hall since February 2006 when it was placed into the case in the presence of Governor General Michaëlle Jean.
“This is a proud but sad day as the end of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games come to a close,” Mayor Robertson said. “The people of Vancouver have welcomed the world with open arms and have been exceptional hosts. We have celebrated like never before and we have cheered athletes from Canada and around the world. Now we look forward to supporting Sochi as they prepare for the 2014 Games.
“People will remember these games for their excitement and excellence. We have enjoyed incredible athletic performances and felt true national pride in Vancouver, Whistler and Richmond, and throughout Canada."
