At last night’s public hearing City Council approved applications for two new projects that together will provide 293 new units of housing, including 67 rental units. One of the projects, located at Main St and 2nd Ave, will contain 4,000 sq. ft. of artist studio space for Vancouver’s arts and culture community.
“These projects build on City Hall’s work to deliver urgently needed affordable housing,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson. “This integration of housing and community space for artists is also another innovative way that the City is working to support the ongoing vitality of Vancouver’s creative sector.”
The development at Main and 2nd will provide a mixed-use building of 256 housing units, with over 25% of the units suitable for families with children. Thirty of the units will be secured social housing units for low to moderate income working artists, with a minimum of 30% of the units renting at rates below BC Housing’s Household Income Limits.
The 4,000 sq. ft. artist studio space that is part of this development will support creative endeavors for artists in Mount Pleasant and nearby neighbourhoods. Vancouver has one of the highest concentrations of artists in Canada, with artists and cultural workers making up 9.9% of the local Mount Pleasant labour force. This new studio space will provide a co-working environment with industrial finishes suitable for visual and other types of artistic practice at an affordable rate.
Council also approved a new housing development located at Fraser St and 64th Ave that will add 37 new rental housing units to the city’s housing stock, with more than 40% either two and three-bedroom units. The project was proposed under the City’s Rental 100 program, which provides incentives for the development of rental housing instead of condos.
