Statement from Mayor on meeting with Minister Sohi and Mayors' Council

March 24, 2016 | Better Transit

"Today, I joined my Mayors' Council colleagues to meet with Infrastructure and Communities Minister Sohi to discuss the federal government's longer-term transit funding plan, a significant step in making the 10-year Metro Vancouver Transportation and Transit Plan a reality. Today's meeting with Minister Sohi - less than 48 hours after the federal government delivered its budget - is a strong signal the federal government is taking Metro Vancouver's transit needs seriously, and is coming to the table as a partner with the region to action transit dollars into badly-needed service improvements and new projects like the Broadway Subway and light-rail transit in Surrey.

"Minister Sohi's commitment to stable, long-term funding for the 10-year Transportation Plan is encouraging to hear. The $370 million allocated for Metro Vancouver transit projects, and the commitment to fund up to 50 per cent of projects, is a significant down payment to get moving on our Plan right away.  We will work quickly and productively with the provincial and federal governments to improve bus and Skytrain service and accelerate the design and engineering of new regional projects to expand transit service to the benefit of tens of thousands riders in Metro Vancouver.  Improving and expanding transit has been a top priority for City Hall and it's encouraging to see it as a priority backed with dollars in the federal budget."
