“In my almost nine years as Mayor, no issue or project has yielded such a passionate, emotional response as this rezoning application for 105 Keefer. The debate over what kind of development will take place at 105 Keefer has gone far beyond that specific site, at times becoming a debate over the future of Chinatown, how we build and strengthen neighbourhoods, and how we embrace and integrate our heritage and history with modern development. This has been a very difficult decision.
"The living conditions in the Balmoral Hotel, a single-room occupancy hotel owned by the Sahota family, are disgusting - no resident of Vancouver should have to live in housing like that. The repeated building and safety violations are putting some of our most vulnerable residents at risk and are a massive strain on City resources.
The City of Vancouver’s Affordable Housing Agency (VAHA) is taking steps to enable more than 1,350 new affordable homes on eight additional City-owned sites. The City-owned sites, worth $72.5 million, were recently allocated to VAHA by Vancouver City Council to enable the development of new affordable rental housing.
