The Empty Homes Tax declaration period for 2017 closed on March 5, 2018 with a total of 183,911 declarations submitted, accounting for 98.85 per cent of all residential property owners in Vancouver.
As this was the first year of implementation of the tax, the findings from the 2017 declarations provide an important baseline for the City to compare all future results and better understand how the tax is influencing the behaviours of property owners.
March 6, 2018 (Vancouver, BC) The City of Vancouver’s Director of Planning has approved the development permit for the construction of temporary modular housing at 525 Powell Street (formerly 501 Powell St.). The new site will be home to 39 new units of housing for women in the Downtown Eastside.
The homes at 525 Powell Street are part of a $66 million commitment from the Government of British Columbia towards building 600 new units of temporary modular housing to address the immediate needs of homeless residents in Vancouver.
Today’s budget from the Government of British Columbia is a positive step forward for Vancouver residents and families across the province. For many years we’ve been calling for provincial action to address real estate speculation, and the new measures announced today will help make sure housing in Vancouver is for homes first, not just treated as a commodity. Today’s historic investment to create more high-quality affordable childcare spaces is great news and will be a big boost for families that need it.
