Mayor Gregor Robertson welcomed the Chinese figure skating team team to Vancouevr on Wednesday, presenting them with a gift of the city flag and congratulating them on their gold and silver medal winning performances in the pairs competition. The event took place at the GE Ice Plaza at Robson Square in downtown Vancouver.

"It’s a thrill to be here today with China’s medal-winning figure skaters and their Team Coach," said the Mayor. "Vancouver has such a strong connection to China going back many generations and the Lunar New Year is one of our biggest celebrations in the City.

"This past Sunday we held the 37th annual Chinatown Spring Festival Parade with the biggest crowd ever in our history.  Even Da Shan was there and I had the chance to wish him Happy New Year!

"This is a very auspicious beginning to the Year of the Tiger. We are honoured to welcome the Chinese team to our City during the Games.  You have a lot of fans here in Vancouver cheering for you - congratulations on your outstanding performance!

"On behalf of the City of Vancouver, I want to wish all of you a Happy Lunar New Year filled with peace, prosperity and good health."
