Big-city mayors meet to press affordable housing solutions

OTTAWA — Canada’s affordable housing crisis and public transit expansions will top the agenda at Friday’s full-day meeting of the Big-City Mayors’ Caucus (BCMC) of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM).

Last November’s Economic Statement committed $81-billion over 11 years for Phase 2 of the federal government’s infrastructure program, with details expected in the upcoming budget. Big-city mayors say this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix the housing crisis — by carving out $12.6 billion over eight years from the already-promised Social Infrastructure Fund.

In addition to meeting with senior federal officials, the mayors will host an open session with housing stakeholders from across Canada:

  • Andy Broderick, VanCity
  • Stéphan Corriveau, Réseau québécois des OSBL d'habitation
  • Jeff Morrison, Canadian Housing & Renewal Association
  • Tim Richter, Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness
  • Nick Sidor, Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada
  • Noah Zon, Maytree Canada

Friday’s meeting comes on the heels of Monday’s release of FCM’s pre-budget submission. Seizing the Moment, which includes detailed recommendations to fix the housing crisis, expand public transit systems, and scale up local green innovation.
