Vancouver Green Capital Business Mission to Shanghai wraps up

The Vancouver Green Capital Business Mission in Shanghai has wrapped up, after four days of productive business-to-business and showcase meetings for Vancouver companies in China.
Mayor Gregor Robertson attributed the success of the business mission to the commitment of the Vancouver companies who participated. "Vancouver has been long-overdue for a business-oriented trip to China, and the companies who came with us have helped secure new interest for our local economy. There is a major opportunity in China for Vancouver’s clean tech, digital media, and green building sectors, and I’m confident we’ll have more deals to announce in the months ahead."
Over 50 one-on-one business meetings were held by the 22 companies in the Vancouver Green Capital Business delegation.  The Business Mission has already concluded two deals: an agreement to deploy new Cisco Systems technology in Vancouver with Pulse Energy, a local green tech company; and a new Canadian Research and Development Centre for green building technology in Tianjin, led by Vancouver Global Green. More deals are expected to be announced in the months ahead.

"While some of these companies built on successes from earlier business programs in China," said Lee Malleau, CEO of the Vancouver Economic Development Commission, "others were reaching out for the first time to potential partners and international investors. It’s our role to help open doors and accelerate business deals, and we are pleased to see this kind of response."

Vancouver business leaders who went to China said that the face-to-face meetings they had with Chinese businesses and government officials were a business opportunity they would not have had otherwise.

"The Green Capital Business Mission was the perfect platform for two days of very successful meetings in Shanghai," said Trevor Bentley, co-founder and President of Atomic Cartoons. "We expected there would be some level of interest but we were overwhelmed at the amount of companies looking to do business in Canada. We met with over twenty companies during the Business Mission and look forward to forging strong relationships with many of those companies."

Jeanette Jackson, CEO of Light-based Technologies, said their company was also able to make some significant headway by participating in the Green Capital Business Mission. "We were able to sit down face-to-face with five separate companies and talk to them about different ways they could incorporate our intelligent LED control solutions into their products. It’s an opportunity we wouldn’t have been able to advance if we had just stayed in Vancouver."

The delegation of Vancouver-area companies attended the business programs as part of the World Fair’s celebration of Vancouver Green Capital Day (September 10th) at Expo 2010 in Shanghai. In addition to delivering workshops and presentations on Vancouver’s digital media, clean technology and green building sectors, the participants met with a wide range of Chinese companies.

The agreement signed by the City of Vancouver, Pulse Energy and global network giant Cisco Systems will position Vancouver as a global smart city, by deploying energy monitoring controllers combined with software from Vancouver-based company Pulse Energy.

The second agreement from the business mission was for the launch of a new green building research and development centre in Tianjin—one of China’s fastest developing regions. Vancouver Global Green, a consortium of sustainable urban design professionals, has partnered with EnVision (Shanghai) and the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City to establish the Net Zero Canadian Research and Development Centre. Construction on the centre, which will provide a platform for Canadian companies to demonstrate and share their green building expertise in China, is set to begin in 2011.

Over the next several months, the Vancouver Economic Development Commission will work with the companies that participated in the Business Mission to follow-up on business leads and outcomes.
